Fluency is the ability to read text accurately, smoothly, and with expression. When you are able to read fluently, you can focus on comprehension (since you don't need to spend time decoding unknown words). At school, we talk about how when you read fluently, it sounds just like you're talking (and not like a robot).
By the end of 2nd grade, students are expected to read at least 90 correct words per minute.

Ways to Practice Fluency at Home:
1. Read, read, read - The best way to learn good fluency is to practice through reading aloud.
2. Repeated readings - Read a book or section of a book to your child so that he/she can hear good expression. Then, have your child read back to you, trying to imitate your phrasing and expression.
3. Read books that are at your child's independent level (their "good fit"). If your child does not know 5 or more words on the first page, it may be too difficult for practicing reading fluency.
4. Have your child record his/her reading and play it back. Many times, hearing yourself read helps you become more aware of your reading rate, accuracy, and expression.
5. Practice reading commonly used phrases. Click the button below to download Fry phrases (using 300 words from the Fry Instant Word List) that make up almost two thirds of all the words students encounter while reading. Practice reading several phrases every night.
